Thank you Megan for sharing your research and conversations! You got my attention. Lots to think about and reflect on .. how technology influences and intersects with gender. I love your idea about Women’s Visibility Week. Look forward to hearing more! Maureen Kritzer-Lange, MSW, LCSW

Thank you for sharing this, Megan. It's one of the most comprehensive pieces I've read on this topic. As someone who writes about moral injury and institutional betrayal, the biases are definitely disheartening, but I find your analysis to be interesting. I think the intersectional aspects are really important - especially when it comes to race because I suspect women of the global majority may still not get the engagement others are able to. I'm looking forward to participating in your proposed experiment to see what happens.

This is a brilliant post Megan. Thank you! I have too many thoughts and words to give you post justice right now. I will read again and process tomorrow. So up for your experiment 💫

Thank you for doing the hard work on our behalf! I think this IS your lane because it involves communication and linguistics in the field of mental health. I recently had a conversation with a colleague who shared that their social media marketing has shifted because "Meta doesn't like therapy jargon." It's all essential talking points to sink into because we all use these platforms to make a living.

That's very true! I just feel like I am out of my depth here- there are those whose passion is gender equity, and I am in awe of how much they know! I'm just dipping my toe in, and don't want to become the go-to on this topic when there are others who are MUCH more qualified!

This is such a balanced piece, Megan. Thank you. Your analysis fits with my own thoughts. It's NOT about gender. It is about biases. I too am up for your experiment.

Thank you Megan. In important clear convo and write up. Key bits that stood out for me:

- "Even if gender does not exist as a field in the model, the pattern itself can skew toward people who already sound like the default."

- "But equal treatment inside the LinkedIn Algorithm machine is not the same as equity in the real world."

- "in a gendered culture, engagement is not neutral either. When platforms follow the lead of large groups of humans, they also follow our bias."

- "they have some clear responsibilities once they know how their systems behave"

- "Space for relational industries"

- "what would happen if women deliberately flooded the system with engagement on women’s posts for a week?"

- "I’m going to keep advocating where equity intersects"

I did the reverse of my profile switch to being female...

I don't want to be redundant but it never hurts to have more glowing praise for hard work - thank you for posting this. I know that feeling of wanting to get something right before posting it and the many, many disclaimers so I'm grateful to have it modelled so authentically. Bravo!

The post itself <3 this is such a messy topic, so being able to tidy it up in a way that's easy to read and digest is a mammoth task. Truly, thank you 🙏🏽

😭😭 thank you!

This is a brilliant, open and insightful piece Megan. I wrote a white paper on women's visibility and algorithms did NOT feature on the list of factors holding back women’s visibility in the workplace. Admittedly, in hindsight, boys’ clubs, socialisation and imposter syndrome did - and they're all part of the same system. I am 100% behind Women's Visbility Week. Let's go

Really insightful! I’m a freelance journalist interested in researching the harassment women receive on LinkedIn! I feel there’s more to the story.

I’m not surprised by any of this.

I definitely notice the difference in my own posts. The “softer”, more relational, and emotionally focused the worse they perform.

I have to strategize on how I post to keep my account visible.

Thank you for the spotlight on this pervasive social phenomenon and systemic issue still playing out in our culture including social platforms.

Count me in on Women’s Visibility Week. Emma K Viglucci, LMFT

Thank you for this research and thoughtful piece. And congrats on getting LinkedIn to speak with you. Question: did Laura say anything about the suppression of women-associated words/terms? Phrases like content that contains women, reproduction , vagina, women’s rights, etc., that we all know truly is being suppressed as a part of their terms and conditions. Was there any commentary type to this? It might not have been the appropriate time.

Thank you for doing this, and for the clear and thorough analysis of what is going on. I love the idea of a test week to see what happens, and I am marking it on my calendar to STFU on Linked In.

This is fascinating, Megan - thank you for doing this and pulling it together. I'm amazed LinkedIn has been so passive in its communications around this issue, and the point you make around radical transparency is something I hope they give serious consideration to. I'm glad you got their attention.

Thanks for the sober and detailed analysis of how the wider ecosystem within which generative AI technologies exist impacts the outcomes of "neutral" tools and processes. Having just read this article in the Guardian on a similar "accidental" submerging of knowledges through generative AI, I'm even more convinced of the importance of resilience: the flourishing of multiple knowledges, languages, world models in this moment.
